Under His WingsRuth 2:12

Needed Is As Near As I Got

This message is for the woman who serves in five places because being needed is the closest thing to being wanted that she has ever managed to arrange

She is on five rotas and she can tell you what every one of them is for.

The Tuesday group. The Sunday kitchen. The two houses she visits on Thursdays, one of which is a two hour round trip. The thing at the school, which is not even her church, which she took on in a year when she already had four.

She is forty one.

Ask anybody in that building about her and you will get the same word inside about eight seconds, which is that she is a godsend, and everybody who says it means it, and none of it is flattery.

She is needed in five places on a good week and she has arranged every bit of it.

That is what she would want you to notice, because she is not a woman who fell into things. She volunteered for four of the five and she asked to be put on the fifth, and she has never once said no to a request in eleven years, and if a sixth came along on Friday she would find the hours.

There is a reason underneath and she has known about it for a long time, in the way you know something you have decided not to look at directly.

Being needed is the closest thing to being wanted that she has ever been able to arrange.

Wanted was never on the table. There was nothing dramatic behind that; she would tell you her childhood was fine and she means it. It is simply that nobody ever came looking for her for herself, and by about nineteen she had understood that the world does not hand that out, and she had noticed something else at the same time, which is that being useful is available to anybody willing to work.

So she built it. Five rotas is a considerable achievement and it produces something real: she is missed when she is not there, and people are glad when she arrives, and there is a warm noise in that kitchen when she comes through the door.

She got the closest available thing and she has been living on it for twenty two years.

And there was an evening in that kitchen in November, with the washing up nearly done, when somebody said the ordinary thing, we would fall apart without you, and it landed in her the way it always does, and then a second thought arrived behind it that she had never had before.

Nobody would come looking for me if I were not on anything.

You know the arrangement. Yours may run on fewer rotas or different ones. But you know what it is to have found the nearest available substitute for a thing you never got, to have built it with your own hands, and to have quietly stopped expecting the actual thing.

Needed Is As Near As I Got

He said it before she did anything for him

Let me name the pit before we go to the verse, because if this becomes an article about resting, you will read it while doing three things and it will not reach you.

The pit is not that serving is wrong. It is not wrong and God is not asking for the rotas and there are people in this article's world who are genuinely better off because you drive two hours on a Thursday.

The pit is a substitution, and it is such a good substitution that nothing has ever exposed it. You found the closest available thing at nineteen and you have been so competent at producing it that the question of the actual thing has never had to come up.

Here is the verse, and watch the timing in it.

The Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.Ruth 2:12

Boaz says this to Ruth in a field, on the first day.

She has not worked for him. She is not on anything. She is a foreign widow gleaning at the edges of a field that is not hers, which is what the destitute were permitted to do, and she has no arrangement with this man of any kind.

And before she has done one single thing for him, he names what she has already done, which is not a service: under whose wings thou art come to trust.

That is her coming to God for shelter, and he speaks of it as the thing that is already true about her.

And read who he says the reward comes from. Not from him. Not from the field, not from the harvest, not from anything he can put her on. A full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel. He hands the whole of it over to God in the same sentence, which is the opposite of a man arranging a place for a useful woman.

Take that at the sink, and know it is not me letting you off anything, it is what is written. He named her shelter under His wings before she had done one thing for anybody in that field. Ruth 2:12 puts the coming to trust first and any work second, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries a sentence like that past a substitution twenty two years deep, and He is not looking for a sixth rota.

You are sheltered and not employed, and you were named before you had done one thing for anybody in that field. Ruth 2:12 hands the full reward to God rather than to the field, and it is the Holy Spirit who shelters, and He was not waiting for a rota.

And here I draw the line this site always draws, in the same breath. God is neither male nor female. Numbers 23:19 says God is not a man, and He is not a woman either; He is spirit. The sheltering wings are one of the ways Scripture describes Him with a mother's picture beside a father's, and both are His own, and it does not make the Spirit a woman and it does not make God a goddess.

The breakthrough

She never once tested it because she never once closed.

You are sheltered and not employed, and you were named before you had done one thing for anybody in that field. Ruth 2:12 says under whose wings thou art come to trust, spoken to a foreign widow on the first day, and it is the Holy Spirit who shelters, and He was not waiting for the rotas to start.

That is the shape of it, and it is not a rebuke, and nobody is telling you that your rotas are a lie or that the people who say godsend are wrong.

It is simply that a woman who is on five things has no way of finding out what anybody would do if she were on none, and you have been running the arrangement so well for twenty two years that no evidence about the other question has ever been able to reach you.

He named your shelter under His wings before you brought Him one thing. That is Ruth 2:12 read exactly as it stands, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that land in a woman who has been earning her place since nineteen, and He was not waiting for the rotas to start.

And I am not going to use this to get you to do anything. There is no ask here, and nothing in this article is a lever, and you are not being told that because God wants you, you should therefore sign up for something or step down from something by the weekend. That would be the same trade in a different currency.

The one small thing at the end is not a resignation and not a policy. It is a test, run once, so that a woman who has never closed the shop finds out something she has had no access to for twenty two years.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the kitchen. You are in Christ, and the authority to speak over an arrangement you built at nineteen is delegated to you in Him; it does not depend on your being needed this week, and for one thing you will not be. These stand on what is written in Ruth and are carried by the Holy Spirit, not by any rota you are on. What He shows you when you say no once, and when, is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own timing.

  1. Arrangement I made because wanted was never on the table, you are the nearest thing I could get and you are not the thing, and I put you down in the name of Jesus. Ruth 2:12 says under whose wings thou art come to trust, and Boaz said it before she had done one thing for him.
  2. Second thought that arrived in that kitchen in November, you are a question I have never once been able to test. It is written that the full reward comes from the Lord God of Israel and not from the field, and His Spirit is the one who shelters, which was never a place I got onto by being useful.
  3. Lord, You are neither male nor female, and You shelter like wings over a foreign widow at the edge of a field. I read this verse out loud and I say no to one small thing this week, kindly and without an explanation, and when the urge to fix it comes I am not following it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
