The yard runs because of what he does between ten at night and six in the morning and there is no way for anybody to know that.
That is not a complaint about anybody. It is the actual structure of the thing. The day crew arrive at seven and the yard is ready, and a ready yard looks exactly like a yard, and there is nothing about it that says a man was here for eight hours.
If he got it wrong they would know. That is the only mechanism there is. His work is visible in exactly one condition, which is its absence.
He is fifty two and he has been on nights for nineteen years, since his second boy was born and the money made sense and then never stopped making sense.
He has been named in nothing. There was a thing at Christmas with certificates, four years running, and the names read out were day crew, every time, and he was not in the building because he was asleep. There is a photograph on the wall in the office from the year they hit the target and he is not on it, and neither is anybody else who was on nights.
He does not sulk about it. He would find sulking about it embarrassing.
What he has, instead, is something he found the words for at about four in the morning in October, standing in the doorway of the shed with a cup of tea while it rained.
He thought: nobody alive has ever seen me work.
Not one person. His wife has seen him leave and seen him come home. His sons have never once seen their father do the thing he has done for nineteen years to keep them.
He said it out loud, actually, into the rain, and then felt slightly stupid, and drank his tea.
You know that doorway. Yours may be an office or a hospital or a house with somebody ill in it. But you know what it is to do the thing that holds a place together in hours when nobody is awake to see it, and to have got so used to that you only notice at four in the morning in the rain.

A seeing that does not need anybody awake
Let me name the pit before we go to the verse, because if this becomes a complaint about certificates it will miss what actually happened in October.
The pit is not the photograph on the office wall. The pit is a sentence a man said into the rain: nobody alive has ever seen me work. And what sits under that is not a wish to be thanked. It is the question of whether a life spent in unwitnessed hours has been witnessed at all, and that question does not get answered by a certificate and would not have been answered by one in any of the four years.
Here is the verse.
Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands.Isaiah 49:16
Graven is cut. It is the mason's word, cut into stone, and it does not depend on anybody remembering to do it and it does not come off in the rain.
You are not unseen in a single one of those hours, and you were seen in all of them as they happened. Isaiah 49:16 has a name cut into a palm, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries that into a man at four in the morning, and neither the cutting nor the seeing ever waited on a witness.
And where He put it is the whole point for a man on nights. On the hands. On the part of Himself that is doing everything else, which means it is in front of Him permanently, at four in the morning as at four in the afternoon, whether there is anybody else awake in the world or not.
That is a seeing that does not require a witness. It is not a report somebody made. Nobody had to be there to tell Him.
And the verse before it sets the measure.
Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.Isaiah 49:15
I want to be careful with that clause, because there is a careless way to read it and this article will not take it. God is not accusing anybody's mother, and He is not inviting you to go looking. He picks the strongest bond in the world He made, says that even that is capable of failing, and puts Himself past it.
Here the line goes in the same paragraph, because on this ground the picture never travels without it. God is neither male nor female. Numbers 23:19 says God is not a man, and He is not a woman either; He is spirit. Isaiah 49:15 is a comparison God chose to say something about His own remembering. It does not make God a mother, He is never addressed by any title Scripture does not give Him, and the picture stays exactly the shape He gave it. Scripture reaches for a father's language for Him constantly and a mother's deliberately, and this is one of the motherly ones, and it is His own.
Take that in the doorway with the tea, and know it is not my sympathy, it is what is written. Every one of those nineteen years has been seen, and the seeing never once needed anybody awake. Isaiah 49:16 has a name cut into a palm, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes that into a man at four in the morning, which no certificate at Christmas was ever going to do.
They were never supposed to see you. If they saw you, something had gone wrong.
That is not a way of talking you out of the question. It is the actual shape of the kind of work you do, and there is a dignity in it that nobody at that Christmas thing has ever had to think about.
But it is not enough by itself, and I am not going to hand it to you as though it were, because the sentence in the rain was not about dignity. It was about whether anybody has seen.
So here is what is written, and it is the only answer to that question that has ever been available to a man on nights.
You are seen in the dark, by name, and it has been going into a record that does not depend on a witness. That is Isaiah 49:16, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries that into a doorway at four in the morning in October, and it was true in every one of the nineteen years before anybody wrote this down.
And your sons. I want to leave you with something about them, because that is where the sentence in the rain actually goes.
They have never seen you work and they never will, and that is not a loss to be repaired. What they have is a house that stayed up. One day, probably later than you would like, one of them will work out what the hours were, and he will not have seen a single one of them, and he will know.
Until then, and after it, there is a name cut into the hands of God, and it went in without anybody being awake to see it happen.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the doorway with your name on your hand. You are in Christ, and the authority to speak over nineteen years of unwitnessed hours is delegated to you in Him; it does not depend on anybody ever reading your name out at anything. These stand on what is written in Isaiah and are carried by the Holy Spirit, not by any certificate. What your sons come to know, and when, is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own timing.
- Work of mine that nobody alive has ever seen, you are not invisible to God, and I say so in the name of Jesus. Isaiah 49:16 says He has graven me on the palms of His hands, and that went in without anybody being awake for it.
- Sentence I said into the rain in October, that nobody has ever seen me work, you are true about people and you are not true about the Lord. It is written that they may forget, yet will He not forget thee, and His Spirit is the one who sees in the dark and needs no witness.
- Lord, You are neither male nor female and You have cut my name into Your hands. I have written it on my own palm at the start of this shift, and every one of these nineteen years has been in front of You the whole time.
