He stopped reading acknowledgements about six years ago and he could tell you which book it was.
The first time he genuinely did not mind. He had given a younger man a great deal of help over about two years, freely, at his own table, and the argument in chapter four was his in a way that anybody who knew both of them would have recognized instantly, and there was no name and there was no note.
He thought at the time: that is how it goes, and I did not do it for that.
The second time was a different person. The third time he was thanked, in a list of eleven people, for encouragement.
The fourth was in the spring, and he opened the book in a shop, and turned to the back the way you do, and stood there.
He is fifty eight.
He would like it on the record that he is not a bitter man and that he has never once said any of this out loud, and that he has continued to help every person who has asked, including two of the four, and that he would do it again.
And also this, which is why he is reading an article at eleven at night rather than working.
He has begun to feel like a source rather than a person. Things go out of him and into other people's work, and they travel, and they do good, and nowhere in any of that is there a mark that says he was here. He has spent his life on things that will outlive him and will not carry him.
He said one sentence to his wife about it in April, and he said it lightly, the way a man does when he is testing whether a thing is sayable. He said: I think I am going to be a footnote nobody printed.
She said something kind. He changed the subject.
You know the acknowledgements page. Yours may be a different kind of record. But you know what it is to have your work travel without you, and to have stopped looking at the place where your name was supposed to be.

An attribution that does not need a page
Let me name the pit before we go to the verse, because if this becomes a grievance about four authors it will be beneath the man reading it.
The pit is not the omissions. Two of them were probably thoughtless and one of them was almost certainly an oversight in production, and none of that is worth an evening. The pit is a sentence said lightly in April: I think I am going to be a footnote nobody printed. And underneath it is the real question, which is not about credit at all. It is whether a life spent making other people's work possible has been noticed by anybody, anywhere, in a way that will last.
Here is the verse.
Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands.Isaiah 49:16
Consider what kind of record that is, since you are a man who thinks about records.
Graven is cut. It is the mason's word: cut into stone, which is what a culture does when it intends a thing to outlast everybody involved in making it. It is not a line of type in a production run. It cannot be dropped at proof stage. There is no edition of it in which somebody forgot.
And where He put it is the part for you specifically. Not in a book. On the hands. On the working part, in front of Him permanently, which means the attribution is not stored somewhere and consulted; it is in view during everything He does.
And the verse before it takes the measure.
Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.Isaiah 49:15
I will handle that carefully, because there is a careless reading and I am not taking it. God is not accusing anybody's mother, and this is not an invitation to go through your own history. He takes the strongest bond in the world He made, says even that can fail, and sets Himself past it.
Here the line goes in the same paragraph, because on this ground the picture never travels without it. God is neither male nor female. Numbers 23:19 says God is not a man, and He is not a woman either; He is spirit. Isaiah 49:15 is a comparison God chose to say something about His own remembering. It does not make God a mother, He is never addressed by any title Scripture does not give Him, and the picture stays exactly the shape He gave it. Scripture reaches for a father's language for Him constantly and a mother's deliberately, and this is one of the motherly ones, and it is His own.
Take that at eleven at night, and know it is not my consolation, it is what is written. Your name is cut where nothing gets dropped at proof, and it is in view during everything He does. Isaiah 49:16 is an attribution that needs no page, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes that down into a man who stopped reading the back of books six years ago.
Every one of those names is cut properly.
You are named where it is permanent, and you were never left out of the one place a name is actually kept. Isaiah 49:16 has a name cut into His own hands, which no acknowledgements page can add to or leave off, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes that into a man who has stopped looking at the back of books.
That is not a way of talking you out of the question, and it does not by itself answer it, and I am not going to hand it to you as though it did.
Here is the answer, and it is the only one available, and it is in the same trade.
Somebody cut your name. He did it deliberately, into His own hands, and He did not put it in a book where it could be dropped between the manuscript and the printer. That is Isaiah 49:16 read as it stands, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries that into a man who has spent his life on things that will outlive him and will not carry him.
And I want to say something about the four books, because you will otherwise leave this article thinking it required you to be noble about them.
It did not. If one of those omissions can still be fixed in a second edition, and you know whether it can, it is entirely proper to write a polite letter, and there is nothing unspiritual in it whatever. A man is allowed to ask for his own work to be attributed.
But that is a small administrative matter and it is not what has kept you up at eleven at night. What has kept you up is the sentence you said lightly to your wife in April, and no second edition on earth would have touched it, and there is exactly one record anywhere that does.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud at the desk with your name on your hand. You are in Christ, and the authority to speak over a question about whether your work has been noticed is delegated to you in Him; it does not depend on any second edition. These stand on what is written in Isaiah and are carried by the Holy Spirit, not by anybody's page. What happens with those books, and whether anything is corrected, is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own timing.
- Page I stopped looking at six years ago, you are not where my name is kept, and I say so in the name of Jesus. Isaiah 49:16 says He has graven me on the palms of His hands, and nothing there gets dropped at proof stage.
- Sentence I said lightly to my wife in April, that I am a footnote nobody printed, you have no standing in this study. It is written that they may forget, yet will He not forget thee, and His Spirit is the one who keeps that record, in view during everything He does.
- Lord, You are neither male nor female and You have cut my name into Your hands. I have written it on my own palm and read it out loud over the top, and somebody cut my name properly, and it was You, and it was done on purpose.
